Blea Tarn Cumbrian Galoppen

The third event in the 2026 Cumbrian Galoppen took place last Sunday (3rd May) at Blea Tarn in Eskdale. It’s probably one of the most distant areas in Cumbria for a lot of BL members, but excellent terrain and planning made it worth the effort (though if you had a bad run, it might not have felt that way at the time).

The event centre was at the impressive Outward Bound centre

The event details threatened a walk to the start involving 300m of ascent. Fortunately that didn’t materialise – maybe it was a clever ruse to make us think a mere 150m of climb was easy. The terrain had complex contour and rock details, covered with a mixture of dead bracken (generally fast going), heather (some knee deep) and evil “white” tussocks in the marshes. Looking ahead to spot a good line through the vegetation was important, though concentrate too hard on that and it was easy to end up on the wrong hill.

Blea Tarn in the sun (definitely not take on Sunday)

Ten BL members attended, with the best result comong from M14 Thomas, 2nd on Orange.

The next Cumbrian Galoppen event is the BL event this Sunday (10th) at Bampton Common near Askham. It should be a great event with courses planned by experienced planner Carol and in contrast to Blea Tarn, very short walks to start and finish. If you still haven’t entered see here for some encouragement.
