British Sprint Champs – 27th/28th June

The British Sprint Champs took place last weekend in Bristol. The relay was held on Saturday, followed by the Individual Races on Sunday. Both were at university campuses

Three BL members attended, just the right number for a relay team. With Christine on first leg, Jane on second and Keith on third, the team finished 18th in the Super Vets class (MW55+, at least one women), 13 minutes behind the winners.

The format for the individual champs is a qualification race in the morning, followed by the finals in the afternoon. The qualification race determines whether competitors are in the A final or the B final. The rules get quite complicated, especially for smaller classes, but basically the top half of each qualifier go to the A final and the bottom half to the B final.

Keith (M65) and Christine (W70) both made the A finals and both finished 4th. Keith was unlucky not to get a medal; he was in the lead for the first 6 control and ended up just 30 seconds behind the winner, with a two minute gap to fifth

Next year’s event is at the University of Sussex, even further from BL land.
