Alston is a fascinating old town, with a maze of small streets and alleyways and cut-throughs, all set on a rather steep hill. Lead and silver were almost certainly mined here by Roman times, and the town was the centre of the Alston Moor mineral mining industry in the 18th and 19 century. It has a host of 17th century buildings and a heritage railway, but also it’s share of industrial dereliction. It is the highest market town in England, and when they get round to re-instating the sets, has one of the highest cobbled roads.
