Eycott Hill Galoppen – 1st Nov 2026

November and December see a sudden rush of Cumbrian Galoppen events, with 4 in 6 weeks. The first of these was BL’s event at Eycott Hill last Sunday and a great event it was too – excellent courses, slick organisation, dry weather and good food.

Thanks to Isabel (organiser), Jeff (planner) and Owain (controller) for all their work, plus of course all those club members who helped on the day

Eycott Hill is owned and managed by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust, to whom we are very grateful for access permission. This link to the CWT website gives some interesting information about why the area is so special and the work they are doing to there. You probably weren’t fully appreciative of the 38 different species of moss and sedge as you paddled through yet another marsh, but they are there. Most people will have seen the Belted Galloway cattle though – part of a conservation grazing plan. Although they are considered docile, it was nice that they weren’t too close to any controls.

The report that Dan has written for the local newspapers can be seen here.
