Orienteering is a fantastic activity for you to enrich your PE and Outdoor Learning curriculum. If you are interested to find out more, you might like to start with our New to Orienteering section. You could also consider joining as a ‘friend’ of Border Liners to be kept up to date with local events and opportunities (£5 per year). These events range from local Saturday events (e.g. Talkin Tarn, Hackthorpe Woods or Eycott Hill), family orienteering, adult/junior coaching and competing in team events both regionally and nationally.

On the British Orienteering page for schools, you can register your school and find a wealth of further information, resources and training, as well as details of national competitions for schools. You can also join the British Schools Orienteering Association for free.
Has your PE teacher attended orienteering CPD?
British Orienteering offer a number of introductory orienteering e-learning courses for primary and secondary schools. If you are not already an orienteer yourself, you might also consider taking part in one of our local Saturday morning events. This is a really good way to learn more about the sport – especially if you bring your own family members! At these events you will find friendly Border Liners who can answer queries about the sport of orienteering
Does your school need an orienteering map?
Many schools in the Border Liners area (Carlisle, Brampton, Penrith, Alston, Shap, Wigton and other surrounding villages) have commissioned local mapmaker Martin Bagness to create their own bespoke orienteering map for their school. Please contact Jane Yates jane-orienteering-bl@outlook.com who can put you in touch with Martin. Approximate prices for a colour pdf map are £125 (primary) and £175 (secondary) but prices can vary if a group of schools request a map as it reduces petrol expenses. There is a sample school map here.
Where can you take your pupils orienteering?
Border Liners has developed a number of permanent and virtual orienteering courses in the Carlisle area. So far, there are courses at Talkin Tarn, Rickerby Park and Watchtree Nature Reserve which make a perfect school outing. There is also a virtual orienteering course at Rickerby Park. Please see our Anytime Orienteering section of the website.
On Saturdays (usually every month or so) we hold a local event which is perfect for beginners to experience orienteering. Unless specified, these events always have a Yellow (sometimes called Novice) course which is suitable for primary pupils and beginner orienteers. While we prefer if competitors enter online, there is entry on the day (EOD) for Yellow courses. We encourage you to share our events with your school community via newsletters or emails. If you plan to bring a group of pupils, you will need to email the organiser of the specific event. Please see our events page for details.

Border Liners Orienteering Club has a long history of planning and organising inter-school events. Currently we work with Eden Valley Sports Partnership (EVSP) and Eden Valley Alliance (EVA) on two annual events. Please note that our members involved with school events are all volunteers so regretfully our capacity is limited. Unfortunately, we are unable to loan equipment to schools.
Over the years, we have many juniors who have been part of the North-West Junior Squad and Great Britain Talent North Squad, competing in national and international orienteering competitions. In 2021 a BL member won a Rising Star Award in the Active Cumbria Sports Awards. If you have any budding orienteers in your school with potential and enthusiasm to progress through the British Orienteering GBR Programme, please do encourage them to come along to our events and make themselves known to us!
