To become a full member of Border Liners (BL) you join British Orienteering, the sport’s national governing body. Alternatively there is an option just to be a “Friend of Border Liners” (see below) which means that you are not a member of British Orienteering through BL, but do still receive regular email updates with club news and can participate in BL social activities and training.
BL membership is not expensive. We have also just confirmed our membership rates for 2026 remain unchanged for at least the 3rd year running.
Orienteering’s membership year is from 1st January to 31st December.
The benefits of joining British Orienteering and Border Liners include:
- BL News – regular email updates from BL with club news, details of all forthcoming events, training sessions and social activities
- Take part in BL training sessions and social activities, as well as representing the club in team relays and inter-club competitions
- You can purchase BL club kit such as O-tops and buffs
- British Orienteering monthly e-newsletters

- Eligibility to compete in UK orienteering national and regional leagues, and inclusion in the national ranking scheme
- Discounts from a wide range of national partners, eg Sportshoes.com, Go Ape; the list changes regularly with the British Orienteering website indicating the current list
For British Orienteering membership
There is a single tier of membership with three age categories:
Senior – any member aged 26 or older on 31 December of the membership year
Young Adult – any member aged 21–25 on 31 December of the membership year
Junior – any member aged 20 or younger on 31 December of the membership year
The British Orienteering membership fees for 2026:
Senior member – £17.00
Young Adult member – £11.00
Junior member – £5.00
Family offer – £39.00 (see details of exactly what this means, but it is of benefit to a family of 2 adults and 2 or more children)
For anyone joining after 1st September who has not been a member in the last 4 years, reduced fees are available (details here)
To be a member of British Orienteering you will also need to be a member of an affiliated club and pay the appropriate club membership fee.
The Border Liners fees for 2026 are:
Senior or Young Adult member – £5.00
Junior member – free
The Total fees for Border Liners including BO are thus:
Senior member – £22.00
Young Adult – £16.00
Junior member – £5.00
Family – £39.00 plus £5.00 for each Senior or Young Adult

“Friend of BL” membership
This is available for anybody who is either registered with British Orienteering through another Club but wants to keep in touch with BL news, or who doesn’t want to join British Orienteering because they only wish to go to local events. To join or renew your membership as a Friend of BL for 2026, please send your details, including email address, and the BL membership fee (Senior £5 and Junior £1, cheque payable to Border Liners Orienteering Club) to Richard Moss, 3 The Meadows, Cliburn, Penrith, CA10 3AH.
