High Pike Long-O (and not so Long-O) – Final Details

Sunday 17th September 2023

Entries and Course Changes: There is no entry on the day. Limited late entry is available by contacting the organisers in advance (BLdanandkaren@gmail.com ). Also contact the organisers if you want to change course. Course changes on the day will be VERY limited.

Travel Directions and Parking: The parking is in a field at Calebreck Farm, 5km SE of Caldbeck. CA7 8JR
Streetmap (OS) NY346358
What3Words – entire.extensive.author
The entrance to the parking field is 250m north of the sharp road bend at Calebrack, on the east side of the road.
Parking Fee: £2 (Donated to a charity of the farmer’s choice)
Dogs are permitted in the field, on leads (but not on courses)
Not suitable for large campervans (Contact organisers for alternative parking).

Note: It is possible that the field may be too wet to use for anything but 4WD vehicles. In this case parking will be on the roadside at Calebreck – follow instructions on the day. Distances to start/finish/registration will still be less than 300m.

Toilets: There will be a portaloo in the car park.

Registration and Map Collection: Situated towards the south of the car park field. When you are ready to start, go to registration to collect your map. If you need to hire an SI card, collect this here too.

Start and Finish: The start and finish are at a gate at the south end of the parking field, about 150m from Registration. Download is at the same place as Registration.
Start times are 10:00 to 12:00. Start time slots have not been allocated so start whenever you want, but make sure it’s early enough to get back before courses close at 15:30. Those on the Long and Medium are strongly advised to start before 11:00.

Course Details:
· Long 18.1km, 780m climb
· Medium 11.8km, 540m climb
· Short 7.9km, 350m climb
· Very Short 5.4km, 200m climb
· Super Short 3.6km, 130m climb

Controls are NOT SIAC enabled (for safety reasons)
Courses close at 15:30.

Map: 1:12,500 for Long and Medium. 1:10,000 for Short, Very Short and Super Short all with 5m contours. Control descriptions are on the map. Loose descriptions will not be available. All courses have pictorial descriptions.
Open fell is shown on the map as white, rather than the standard yellow. There are numerous vague paths formed by quad bikes and animals. In general, they are not mapped.
A previous map of part of the area is here https://www.bl.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#100 . It has been extended west and south.

Terrain: Runability is generally reasonable – a mixture of grass, tussocks and heather, but very little bracken or rock. It includes old mine workings and areas of contour detail. Very Short and Super Short do not go into areas of tussocks or heather, but do include some moderately steep slopes.

Clothing: Shorts are permitted.
Long, Medium, Short: Cagoules and whistles are compulsory. If the weather is bad, waterproof trousers plus hat and gloves will also be compulsory – make sure you bring them just in case.
Very Short, Super Short:   Whistles compulsory. Cagoules will be compulsory only in bad weather.
(A notice at registration will let you know if the weather is “officially” bad.)

Safety: Sheep and deer roam the area so please check for ticks after running. Fell ponies may also be encountered. There are a number of (mapped) fenced enclosures surrounding potentially dangerous mine workings – do not enter them.
If it’s hot you should consider carrying water. Long, Medium and Short courses cross streams that are probably drinkable (but the organisers take no responsibility for this!)
There is a phone signal on most of the area and the organisers’ phone number is printed on the map.

Dogs: Unfortunately not allowed on courses this year.

Refreshments: Free Tea/coffee and cake (including gluten-free) will be available after your run. Please bring a mug if possible.

Results/Routegadget: These will be on the BL website (https://borderlinersorienteering.org ) very soon after the event

Queries: Contact planners/organisers Karen and Dan Parker (BLdanandkaren@gmail.com)
