Entries: Now open on SiEntries here. Close end of Wednesday 12th July. Pre-entry only except for Novice course where there will be some entry on the day, subject to map availability. Short Green/Green Senior £6 Junior £2. Novice Junior/Senior £2. If you are new to orienteering and would like to go round as a group or in a pair, just enter one person and use the option to select any additional maps that your group would like at £1 each.
Courses: Novice (2km 25m), Short Green (3.1km 25m) and Green (4.3km 50m). The Novice is perfect for juniors, families and beginners. The Short Green offers a more leisurely course for experienced orienteers, with the Green being more physically challenging.
Terrain: Open fields and sparse woodland. There is livestock in some fields (sheep). Please shut all gates you open especially gates in and out of the woodland areas.
Starts: an earlier start from 10am – 11.30. Courses close 12.15pm
Parking: Approach from the B6412 just south of the village of Great Salkeld. Entry and exit from the main road through two distinctive sandstone pillars onto a narrow lane. Drive to the bottom of the lane and turn left into the Cricket Club. Do not go through the electronic gates towards the main house. Parking will be in the field by the Cricket Club. Due to a cricket match starting at 2pm, all cars need to vacate the Cricket Club car park by 12.30pm to avoid congestion and allow the cricketers to start setting up at 12.45pm. You will be directed to park.
Registration and download: will be in the Cricket Club car park. Please do not forget to download before you leave.
Map: 1:5000 2.5m contours Please do not climb over any fences or walls. Use crossing points e.g. stiles, gates and marked crossing points.
Safety: The area borders the River Eden and there are some smaller ponds with deep water. The Novice course has been planned to avoid the river. Please keep close supervision of any younger children.
Dogs: STRICTLY NO DOGS ON THE COURSE DUE TO LIVESTOCK. PLEASE KEEP DOGS ON A LEAD IN THE PARKING AREA.
Facilities: We have kind permission to use the toilets in the Cricket Club only. Please do not use the rest of the building e.g. kitchen, tables and chairs.
Health and Safety: The First Aid point will be at Registration/Download. Please wear clothing and footwear suitable for the weather and terrain. Long trousers recommended due to some brambles/nettles/long grass but are not essential. For those choosing to wear shorts – you have been warned!
Social: The village of Great Salkeld is less than a mile from the Nunwick Cricket Club (turn right at the main road back at the top of the lane). There is a large village field and play area with tables for a picnic. The Highland Drove Inn is open from 12pm and serves both inside and take-away food from 12-2pm. There is also a delightful beer garden at the back! Booking advised for food 01768 870304.
