Parking is in the vicinity of Burblethwaite and Greenhead on hardstanding and along the minor road verge. The event will be signed from the B5299 at GR NY284384 (road between Caldbeck and Boltongate). Please follow marshals’ instructions. Share lifts wherever possible. If you are entered on Very Short Green, it may be possible to park with the officials at Holborn Farm, which will slightly reduce your walk to and from the start. Marshalls will have a list of those who have entered this course.

Registration/Download: will be located at Holborn Farm which is on the way to the start and less than 400m from car parking.

Terrain: Open fell area grazed by sheep, with many depressions, niches and some earth walls formed partly by disused quarries and earlier settlements. Quite runnable for younger legs, with limited rock features and some marshy ground. In the unlikely event of there being any cows grazing, please approach with care and give them a wide berth.

Toilets: Portaloo in the car park.

Entries: Limited entry on the day while maps last for Yellow (Novice) and Orange courses only. If you did not fill in an SI-Card number on your entry, an SI-Card will be waiting for you at registration/download. No extra charge unless you lose it.

If you are new to orienteering and will be going round as a group, just enter one person and use the option to select any additional maps that your group would like at £1 each.

Map scale: Yellow to Blue courses 1:7,500. Brown 1:10,000

Yellow and orange courses do not use or cross any roads – these courses are bounded by minor roads that are not heavily used. Juniors should not cross or run along any roads.  Light Green crosses one minor road with little traffic and good visibility. Please take care when crossing – it is not marshalled.

Other courses cross roads including a B road which may have fast-moving traffic. Please take great care when crossing.

There will be taped/flagged sections on the yellow course, shown as a dashed line between controls on the map and indicated on the control description: competitors should follow the tapes/flags.

There are a number of crags in the area. Courses Green, Blue and Brown have controls in the vicinity of one high crag. Courses are planned so that optimum routes do not approach through the crags, but please take care in this area. There are also a number of sinks in the area which appear as large depressions – please avoid them.

All controls are SIAC enabled – need to punch start and finish. Loose descriptions will be available as well as being printed on the map.

Starts: 10.30 – 12.30. Start is approx. 1.6Km from registration/download. The start will be passed on the way back from the finish, so clothing can be left near the start. The route to the start is 1km along a good track which then crosses a ford: there are makeshift stepping stones but be prepared for wet feet. The last 0.6Km follows a rough, grassy footpath. There is an electric fence just before the start. This is very low and will have a marked crossing point – please cross with care.

Finish: Please follow the taped route, over a small bridge (take care as it may be slippery), back to the clothing dump near the start area and then back to download.

Clothing: Shorts may be allowed if the weather is reasonable. The controller will make a decision on the day and signs will be displayed at registration. Be aware that the area is open fell and can be very exposed so dress accordingly. Cagouls may be compulsory in the event of poor weather. Signs will be displayed at registration.

You are strongly advised to take a whistle.

Please check for ticks after your run.

First Aid: Available at the finish. There will also be a first aid kit at download. Competitors with an existing medical condition are invited to leave details in a sealed envelope at registration.

Coaching: Those who have signed up for the coaching session prior to their run should meet at registration at 9.30am with everything needed for the session and your run. Coaching will be adjacent to the Start.

Dogs: On a lead in the car park area only. NO DOGS IN THE COMPETITION AREA – sheep grazing.
