The latest section of Paul Watson’s useful guide to the symbols on maps and description that are not controls is now available here. It covers Crossing Points and Uncrossable Boundaries and considers them from both a competitor point of view and that of a planner or controller. Definitely worth a read!

The Joys of Scottish Orienteering
Those BL members who just can’t get enough Scottish orienteering had yet another opportunity to feed their addiction this weekend. On Saturday (12th April) there was a middle distance event at South Achray near Aberfoyle and on Sunday (13th) a proper distance event at Limerigg, a new area near Airdrie. The Achray event was organisedContinue reading “The Joys of Scottish Orienteering”
Fun in the Sun at Burnbanks
Burnbank Cumbrian Galoppen – 6th April 2025 It’s hard to believe now, but six weeks ago we were close to cancelling this event; there was no organiser, the appointed planner was no longer able to do the job, the normal car park had been planted with trees, and the backup field was half lake. Fortunately,Continue reading “Fun in the Sun at Burnbanks”
A Great Event at Great Tower
The fourth event in the Cumbrian Galoppen series took place on Sunday (30th March) at Great Tower Wood on the east side of Windermere. It had everything – warm sunny weather, beautiful and complex woodland, an excellent map and well planned courses. Not surprisingly it attracted over 400 competitors, including 21 Border Liners. Careful navigation,Continue reading “A Great Event at Great Tower”
If you go down to the woods today….

It was the Eden Valley Sports Partnership annual orienteering event. TheContinue reading “If you go down to the woods today….”

Lowry Hill Club Night
Many thanks to Angela and Dick for hosting such an excellent club night yesterday (Tuesday 18th March). Twenty or so club members came along to enjoy some informal orienteering round the Lowry Hill estate in North Carlisle, followed by a (infrequent) chance to sit around and chat to fellow BLers. Angela had cleverly devised aContinue reading “Lowry Hill Club Night”
Flippin’ Heck, where’s the rest of my course gone?
The latest section of Paul Watson’s excellent guide to pictorial control descriptions is now available here. It covers the map flips (or turnovers) and map exchanges used by planners when a course would be too convoluted if printed on a single map.
