Many thanks to Angela and Dick for hosting such an excellent club night yesterday (Tuesday 18th March). Twenty or so club members came along to enjoy some informal orienteering round the Lowry Hill estate in North Carlisle, followed by a (infrequent) chance to sit around and chat to fellow BLers. Angela had cleverly devised aContinue reading “Lowry Hill Club Night”

Flippin’ Heck, where’s the rest of my course gone?
The latest section of Paul Watson’s excellent guide to pictorial control descriptions is now available here. It covers the map flips (or turnovers) and map exchanges used by planners when a course would be too convoluted if printed on a single map.
Seven go to Portugal
Thanks to Keith Tonkin for this report and photos. In search of a little winter orienteering in the sun 7 of us made the trip to Portugal for 2 weekends of racing. The Portugal O Meeting (POM), this year in the Algarve and attracting over 2300 entrants, was followed by a weekend of middle distanceContinue reading “Seven go to Portugal”
Is your orienteering calendar looking a bit empty? Here’s the answer
Unless you want to travel to northern Scotland, or the deep south of England, March is looking a bit short of orienteering events. Fortunately for Border Liners members, the club is offering two informal events to fill the gap…. On Tuesday 18th March there is a Lowry Hill Lampposts event and social evening, based atContinue reading “Is your orienteering calendar looking a bit empty? Here’s the answer”
Cumbria Sports Awards – many congratulations to Dick
Dick has won the Services to Sport award at the 2025 Cumbria Sports Awards. A dinner and ceremony were held in Workington last Friday, where Dick was presented with his award which recognises over fifty years of service to orienteering and Border Liners. Border Liners win battle with the elements
Last Sunday saw Border Liners (BL) compete in the qualifying round of the Compass Sport Trophy, the national orienteering inter-club competition. This was held on the moors above Clowbridge Reservoir near Burnley. Navigation was mostly quite straightforward, but there was some woodland with complex vegetation at the start which caught out a large number ofContinue reading “Border Liners win battle with the elements”
We’re in the final!
Well done to all the club members who travelled down to Lancashire on Sunday (23rd Feb) for the Compass Sport Trophy North West Qualifier event at Clowbridge. We won, and so will be going to the final in September, near Middlesbrough (map preview here). It was a very wet and windy day, but there wereContinue reading “We’re in the final!”
High Stand Event – Saturday 15th February
Dan’s press report about the event is now available, with photos from Julie Here are some additional comments from the planners/organisers…
Orienteering at High Stand Woods, Armathwaite – Feb 15th
Border Liners Orienteering Club’s latest event took place last Saturday at High Stand near Armathwaite. The terrain varies from dense conifer plantation with low visibility (and running speed) to fast open broadleaf woodland visited by the longer courses. While the woodland was relatively unscathed by Storm Eowyn there were some areas of fallen trees toContinue reading “Orienteering at High Stand Woods, Armathwaite – Feb 15th”
British Night Champs Weekend – 8th and 9th February 2025
The British Night Championships were held at Touch Forest, just west of Stirling. It’s an area that hasn’t been used for 15 years because of permission difficulties, and rumour has it that even now it can only be used for night events. You can see the map here, and it was every bit as challengingContinue reading “British Night Champs Weekend – 8th and 9th February 2025”
