Only a week to go until the Knipe Scar Middle Distance Event on 17th May, and it’s all looking good. The area itself is looking, and smelling, particularly attractive at the moment with the gorse in full bloom. The bracken is starting to make an appearance, but at present it’s just thinly spaced, green shootsContinue reading “Knipe Scar – Preparations are going well (so far)”

Celtic Gold
Those prepared to travel for their orienteering had to make a choice last weekend – either the Irish Champs near Coleraine, or the Scottish Champs at Carnoustie. But whichever you chose you couldn’t avoid the sand dunes. Keith and Christine took the Irish option and had a hectic, but very successful time. Only there forContinue reading “Celtic Gold”
Hallin Fell Event – third time lucky
After this event was cancelled twice last year because of a wet parking field, it was a big relief to all involved when it finally happened on Saturday (28th April). And it was definitely worth the wait. The weather was dry and sunny with a cooling breeze, the courses were challenging both navigationally and physically,Continue reading “Hallin Fell Event – third time lucky”
Hallin Fell 26th April 2025
Border Liners Orienteering Club held the latest event in their Saturday Series at Hallin Fell last Saturday. The threatened rain never materialised and conditions were perfect for running on this great little area overlooking Ullswater. While the courses were relatively short in distance they more than made up for it in ascent, with even theContinue reading “Hallin Fell 26th April 2025”
JK Relay – drizzle and statistics
After three days of good weather, the JK Relay day was damp and drizzly, with later started getting the worst of the rain. Middleton Park in Leeds was the venue – it provided an excellent change-over area but the orienteering lacked technical challenge, especially on shorter courses. Most courses had an arena run-through part wayContinue reading “JK Relay – drizzle and statistics”

Crossing a Boundary
The latest section of Paul Watson’s useful guide to the symbols on maps and description that are not controls is now available here. It covers Crossing Points and Uncrossable Boundaries and considers them from both a competitor point of view and that of a planner or controller. Definitely worth a read!
The Joys of Scottish Orienteering
Those BL members who just can’t get enough Scottish orienteering had yet another opportunity to feed their addiction this weekend. On Saturday (12th April) there was a middle distance event at South Achray near Aberfoyle and on Sunday (13th) a proper distance event at Limerigg, a new area near Airdrie. The Achray event was organisedContinue reading “The Joys of Scottish Orienteering”
