Night & Day at Talkin Tarn

Saturday 8th November saw Border Liners host a double header event at Talkin Tarn Country Park near Brampton. In the morning we held one of our local Saturday series events with a specific Beginner course alongside more usual Short and Long options for more experienced orienteers. Orienteering controls were put out whilst Talkin Tarn parkrun was taking place commemorating Rememberance Day, with flags, poppies and many runners wearing red. Planned by Gerry Garvey the orienteering courses explored the full extent of the country park. The short Beginner course proved popular with some looking to try out the sport. Entry numbers were boosted by a good turn out of Brownies & Guides from Wetheral & Alston taking the opportunity for a spot of navigation coaching and a dash around the course. Full results.

Are the stars out tonight, I can see that its not cloudy but bright, but I only have eyes for you…… my next control**

In the evening we held a night orienteering event, the first in the North West Night League series for the 2025/26 winter night-O season. The skies were mostly clear, the moon was very bright….

Courses were more technical than the day event with a greater spread of off-path controls to locate in the dark. The Blue course was won by BL’s James Chapman in a fast time of 37.09, helped by having lived close to the tarn for many years. The Green course was won by John Britton from MDOC in 47.00, with Orange won by Tom Daplyn a 10 year old BL member in 32.26. Full results.
