Bitts Park Event – 25th October

It was good to see over 50 people at the Bitts Park event last Saturday. Anyone who went thinking “it’s just a park” was in for a surprise as complex route choice and finding very soon caught out the unwary.

Here is the report Dan has written for the local newspapers:

The latest event in Border Liners Orienteering Club Saturday Series took place on 25th October at Bitts Park, Carlisle. The courses were Sprint Orienteering style with fast running round many control points, twisting and turning through the park and surrounding area. The courses were excellently planned by Keith Tonkin with concentration and speed control key to a good run. Right from the word go, competitors were challenged to find routes round uncrossable barriers and tricky underpasses / bridges causing quite a few people to lose time.

The longest course (4.4km straight line, about 6km actual running distance) was a family affair with West Cumberland runner Jamie Rennie winning in a time of 30:09, 2 minutes ahead of son George in second place. West Cumberland OC made it a clean sweep with Phil Newall third. Top Border Liner and first woman was Nadine Wright, 4th in an excellent time of 38:00. The Short course (3.0km straight line) was won by Jackie Chapman of Lakeland OC in a time of 32:37, well clear of Ian Teasdale (WCOC) and top Border Liner Martin Keegan. Quinn Russell (M10) took the honours on the easy / junior course in a time of 33:43 over a minute ahead of Border Liner Brook Kyle (W12).
