Held on the hottest day so far this year, the Eycott Hill provided plenty of challenge both physically and navigationally. Paul’s courses were excellent with plenty of route choice and carefully placed controls that required accurate navigation, despite the open terrain.
Thanks to Isabel and her small team of helpers, for the very smooth organisation with the gazebo at download providing a welcome escape from the sun for many.
Julie and Christine provided a useful coaching session before the event – Eycott is a great place to practise contour interpretation with its multitude of long, bumpy ridges

Thanks as always to Cumbria Wildlife Trust for giving permission for the event

Here is Dan’s press report:
Border Liners Orienteering Club held the latest event in their Saturday Series at Eycott Hill last weekend. Everyone was remembering a previous event there when torrential rain and gale force winds added to the challenge. This time extreme weather of a different nature was the order of the day. The temperature was around 30 degrees, with strong sun and very little wind so most competitors were happy to finish and get back in the shade as quickly as possible. Despite these difficulties there were some fast times, perhaps aided by the kleggs giving an added incentive to keep moving!
Despite the rough terrain, the longest, Blue, course was won by Edinburgh runner and former international Aidan Smith in a very fast time of 40:22, nearly 5 minutes ahead of 2nd place. Top Border Liner was Jeff Powell Davies (M45), 8th in a time 60:58 with Karen Parker (W60), also BL, being first lady home in 63:36.
The Green course was won by West Cumberland runner Simon Hunter in a time of 35:17, over 3 minutes clear. Raymond Wren (M75) was top Border Liner, 7th in a time of 60:23.
Short Green was won by Ian Teasdale (M65) of West Cumberland Orienteering Club in a time of 50:15 with top Border liner being Gary Newman (M60).
Due to the conditions the Very Short Green course proved popular and was won by Graham Capper (M65) of Lancashire club SROC. Joan Cumpstey (W75) was top Border Liner in 70:07, just missing out on second place by 2 minutes.
On the technically easier Orange course BL member Kieran Grehan (M20) was 4th in a time of 77:17. The shortest, Yellow course, was 1.8km and took Border Liner Angela Whitworth (W80) 107:09 – her excuse was an extended lunch stop!
