The SLMM took place last weekend in the Central Lake District. A number of Border Liners members were involved: on the organisational side Karen and Dan were Race Directors, John and Julie were Planners and Oscar was an official photographer, while as a competitor Natalie and her partner Rose were first Female team in the Carrock Fell Class (37km, 2500m ascent)

The weekend didn’t get off to a good start; very heavy rain on Friday evening flooded half the car park, and caused minor streams on the fells to turn to torrents. Fortunately by morning water levels had largely subsided but with more rain forecast the decision was made to use bad weather courses on Saturday. As it turned out the main difficulty competitors faced was the thick mist, with visibility down to 10m in places. Even “easy” courses become navigationally challenging in such conditions – competitors with an orienteering background definitely benefited. Sunday offered totally different conditions – virtually no rain, good visibility and even some sunshine. The mixture of relief, elation, a good meal and sun created a wonderful atmosphere at the finish.

Next year’s SLMM will be on 4th/5th July, somewhere in the Lake District – the exact location is only revealed closer to the time. For anyone thinking of trying a mountain marathon for the first time it’s an excellent choice; there are courses of all lengths (30km to 60km) and a score course too, drinks (milk, beer, etc.) are available at the overnight camp, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly , and (normally) the weather is good. Anyone 14 or over can take part (with restrictions on who they run with) and there are age based competitions for youngsters and vets (over 45).
If you are tempted the SLMM website (https://slmm.org.uk/ ) gives lots more information. Entries for next year open in January, but be warned , some courses fill up very quickly.
