What a good event! Excellent courses, smooth organisation, a super location for the event centre and parking at Snittlegarth Farm and almost dry weather made for a great day. Even the longish walks to start and finish were relieved by pretty scenery and excellent views. Many thanks to Julie and John who between them organised and planned and to Roger (WCOC) for his helpful but light-touch controlling.

Here is Dan’s press report about the event:
Border Liners Orienteering Club held the 6th Cumbrian Galoppen event of the year last Sunday at Binsey, north of Bassenthwaite Lake. After a chilly start and a few showers during event setup, the weather improved and the sun even made the odd appearance, making for ideal running conditions. The terrain was predominantly rough, grassy heathland with sections of heather before competitors entered fast grazed fields which made for a sprint finish for those who had the legs for it.

On the longest Brown course West Cumberland Orienteering Club’s Toby Heppell (M18) won in a time of 54:52, 7 minutes ahead of top Border Liner James Chapman, who came 5th. First lady home was Border Liner Karen Parker (W60) who took 77:32 and came 19th overall.
On the Blue course Ian Hinkins (M40) of Lakeland Orienteering Club showed everyone a clean pair of heels winning by 4 minutes in a time of 50:07. Isabel Berry was top Border Liner, 7th overall, in an impressively rapid time of 59:53.
Edward Shawcross (M16) of Lancashire club SROC won the Green course by over 4 minutes in a super speedy time of 35:23 with Border Liners occupying 3 of the top 7 places; taking the honours was Owain Rice (M35) 3rd in 40:58, hotly pursued by 4th place Ian Cumpstey (M45) and local lad Raymond Wren (M75) who was 7th.
Tess Higginbottom (W14) of Cheshire Club DEE won the Short Green course, 3 minutes ahead of Border Liner Tricia Davies (W70) who was second. A special mention should go to BL local member Dave McQuillen (M80) who came 4th in a time of 46:03.
On the slightly less technical but no less competitive Light Green course Border Liner Anne Deeney (W35) was second in a quick time of 37:27. Post race refreshments provided by L’al Yan were well received and a huge thanks must go to Julie and John Ferris-Worth for staging another successful event.
