Northern Champs Weekend 17th and 18th May

Here is Dan’s press report on the weekend….

There was another fantastic 2 days of orienteering in the Lake District over the weekend of 17th/18th May. On the Saturday, Border Liners staged a UK Orienteering League middle distance race on Knipe Scar, between Askham and Bampton. It was BL’s biggest event of the year and club members turned out in force to provide a smoothly organised competition widely praised by competitors. There was still chance for some good BL performances with James Chapman 7th on the longest (Black) course, Jeff Powell Davis 2nd on Brown, Julie Ferris-Worth 2nd lady on Green, Tricia Davies 6th on Very Short Green and Ned Hutt 4th on Yellow.

On Sunday it was the Northern Orienteering Championships held at Angle Tarn Pikes near Patterdale; Border Liners finished the day with four wins. Following on from her British Championships W60 gold last week, Karen Parker was racing in the Women’s Elite class against people less than half her age. After keeping pace with the field for the first three quarters of the race her superior stamina saw her pull away at the end of a gruelling race to take a fantastic win by over a minute. Jeff Powell Davies had another great run on M45. After trailing for much of the race, a mistake by the leader, let him through to win by 27 seconds. Christine Goulding won W60 in a close fought race. Having led for the first half, a wobble on checkpoint 9, saw her drop to second before regaining the lead at checkpoint 12 to take the win. In the W70 class Tricia Davies had a clear victory, winning by over 7 minutes. In the same class Judy Johnson was 3rd, narrowly missing out on 2nd by just 8 seconds. In other classes Stella Lewsley and Jill Libby took 2nd and 3rd place in a close fought W65 race, Isabel Berry was 3rd in W40, Andy Lewsley was 5th in M70, Keith Tonkin was 4th in M65 and Dan Parker was 4th in Men’s Elite.
