The fourth event in the Cumbrian Galoppen series took place on Sunday (30th March) at Great Tower Wood on the east side of Windermere. It had everything – warm sunny weather, beautiful and complex woodland, an excellent map and well planned courses. Not surprisingly it attracted over 400 competitors, including 21 Border Liners.
Careful navigation, and staying in contact with the map was the key to a good run. Once you were lost, relocation was very difficult especially on the steep craggy slope and generally required significant extra climb. Half way round I was asked by one Blue competitor (not a BL member!) if he could please follow me to the next control as he’d already been out two hours and had totally lost confidence. Fortunately I found it fairly cleanly.
Only 5 BL members managed to finish in the top half of the results for their course, with Owain highest placed at 4th. Maybe this is a refection of the fact that many of us wanted to make the most of such an excellent area and ran longer courses than we might sometimes!
Green: Owain (4th), Christine K (32nd), Julie (35th)
Blue: Keith (21st)
Brown: Karen (34th)
(and a mention for new member Anne who nearly made the cut at 9th out of 16 on Light Green)
One person who sadly didn’t enjoy the event was Andy L. He tripped very soon after the start and hit his forehead on a tree. He required stitches and now has a very dramatic and painful looking black eye. Best wishes for a speedy return to action.
Thank you to LOC for such a good event. Full results and Routegadget areavailable on their website here
