Thanks to Dan Parker for this press report on the British Night Champs, Appleby Urban and the Cumbrian Galoppen at Birkett Common…..
A small band of Border Liners headed north of the border to compete in the British Night Orienteering Championships on Saturday 8th February at Touch just west of Stirling. The terrain was totally pathless and almost completely wooded; some was moderately fast going, but other parts were very thick and tough. Even the route to the start needed perseverance and required use of a rope to haul yourself up a very steep and slippery slope. Technically the courses were extremely challenging from start to finish and if you did wander off route it was very difficult to relocate and get back on line. From a Border Liners’ perspective, star of the show was Keith Tonkin taking 45:20 to win the M65 gold in a very tightly fought race – second place was just 23 seconds behind, with third only 8 seconds further back. Other BL medal winners were Dan Parker taking silver in M60 and Christine Kiddier also taking silver in W70.

Earlier in the week BL opened up a new venue to orienteering with a night event round the streets of Appleby. While this was not particularly good practice for the British Night Championships it was highly enjoyable nonetheless.
Several Border Liners were also racing at Birkett Common near Kirby Stephen at the second Cumbrian Galoppen event of 2025 on Sunday 9th February. BL members took wins on 3 courses with Patricia Davies winning Short Green, Andrew Bell winning Very Short Green and Net Hutt winning Orange by an impressive 6 minutes.
