Binsey Christmas Charity Event

On 27th December, nearly 70 competitors enjoyed some post-Christmas fun at BL’s annual charity event organised, as ever, by Raymond and Jenny. It was held on Binsey, the most northerly of the Wainwrights, in one of the few parts of the country wherethe odd glimpse of sun managed to break through the fog.

There was a “Long”course and a “Short” course. Both required competitors to get as many of the 18 controls as they could in 45 minutes, but on Long bonus points could be gained by doing controls in groups (for example going to all the controls on boulders without going to any other controls in between). On Short you could get away with only going up the hill once, whereas on Long extra climb was inevitable. Clever course planning meant that there was no obvious route on either course and competitors were left scratching their heads……

Higher controls were in the mist which made it extra challenging.

After the event, many competitors retired to Raymond and Jenny’s house in nearby Bothel where they enjoyed Jenny’s excellent soup and cakes, as well as a chance to catch up with fellow orienteers and discuss the routes they should have taken.

The money raised at the event, an amazing £588, is going to the Great North Air Ambulance

It was a very sociable event – one of our newest members, Ali, with one of our longest standing, Angela
