Dick Whitworth has been shortlisted for the Services To Sport award at this year’s Cumbria Sports Awards. There were 31 nominations for the award and Dick is now one of three on the shortlist. The final decision is being announced at the awards ceremony on February 28th.
As the citation accompanying his nomination says:
“Dick has been fundamental in creating the bedrock of orienteering in NE Cumbria, and in supporting its development over more than 50 years“.
Any one of the roles he has undertaken during this time is worthy of praise but as a whole they make an astonishing list:
Mapping (on almost every BL map you will see him credited)
Map Printing (well over 10,000 maps over nearly 20 years)
Organising, Planning and Controlling (too many events to count!)
Treasurer (30+ years)
… not to mention still competing and inspiring us all to keep going into older age.
